We take passenger entertainment very seriously!
Our latest Stopover program has now run its course and it’s time to look back and reminisce about all the exciting events and performances that our Stopover passengers enjoyed.
The online competition asked passengers to apply to turn their boarding pass into a Stopover Pass, giving them access to an unforgettable series of events and performances during their Stopover in Iceland to celebrate our 80th anniversary.
Stopover Pass began with us enrolling our staff into stage school in order to transform them into actors for starring roles in our launch performance. They each brought their own skills to the mix as well as learning new ones.
An 80-year celebration above the clouds
To celebrate 80 years, we decided to do something spectacular for the launch performance. Hence, Ahead of Time was created in collaboration with a London-based theatre company; this was an immersive transatlantic theatre production inspired by Icelandair history. You could call that taking in-flight entertainment to new heights!
September 8 was a day to remember. The first act took place on a flight from London Heathrow to Keflavík, with the audience meeting the stars of the show. The second act was a party in our Saga Lounge at Keflavík Airport, and the third and final act took place on a flight from Keflavík to JFK in New York. The story included eccentric travellers from across the decades, space-age flight attendants and a jazzy swing band, and our passengers all really enjoyed this high-flying performance. We later shared highlights from this flying theatre experience with the world in a behind-the-scenes film.
From football to music to stand-up comedy
Over five months, a series of performances with some of Iceland’s top performers were available to Stopover passengers, ranging from an electric match with the National Football Team to cozy Christmas jazz in our Saga Lounge with singer Kristjana Stefánsdóttir.
A Stopover Buddy also took lucky Stopover Pass-holders to the Iceland Airwaves festival in November as well as to a Sigur Rós concert in December. Others enjoyed a personal and up-close performance of the electro-pop band Milkywhale, or a hilarious night with comedian Ari Eldjárn in the homes of Stopover Buddies.
Our next Stopover campaign is just around the corner! Stay tuned for even more exciting things to do on your Stopover in Iceland.
Thank you to our Stopover Pass-holders, it was a thrill!
