Airbus A321LR

Ideally suited to transatlantic routes, the A321LR from Airbus is the newest addition to our fleet.

The first Airbus, named Esja, arrived in December 2024, joined by more A321LR aircraft in winter 2024-25.

In addition, we will add the Airbus A321XLR to the Icelandair fleet in 2029.

General introduction

The A320neo family of aircraft from Airbus is firmly established as the most modern and best-selling single-aisle fleet in the world, reaching new heights in efficiency.

The A320neo’s long-range variant – the A321LR – provides extended range and payload, capable of flying routes of up to 4,000 nautical miles (7400km or 4600 miles).

The A321LR (and the A321XLR, coming to Icelandair in 2029) will replace our fleet of Boeing 757s. The Airbus models offer significant fuel and emission reduction savings compared to the older B757.

Our aircraft

Airbus’ award-winning Airspace interior concept brings a new definition of cabin comfort on the A321LR. This is the widest single-aisle cabin on the market, with increased personal space for passengers.

Cabin enhancements include the integration of new slimmer sidewall panels for extra personal space at passengers’ shoulder level; better views through the windows with redesigned trim and integrated window shades; customizable LED lighting technologies; and the largest overhead bins for single-aisle jetliners.

Plenty of overhead storage space helps passengers board and disembark with minimum fuss, as well as giving cabin crew more space in which to work.

Our Airbus A321LRs have seating for 187 passengers: 22 in Saga Premium, and 165 in Economy.

All our Airbus passengers benefit from the A321LR’s low interior noise and latest in-flight entertainment. We're excited to be the first airline partnering with Panasonic to offer its new Astrova in-flight entertainment system, pioneering the next generation of passenger experiences. Cinema-grade visuals can be enjoyed on 13-inch screens in Economy, and 16-inch screens in Saga Premium.

Esja is the iconic mountain backdrop of Reykjavík. This 914-meter (2,999ft) landmark is not a single peak, but a volcanic mountain range. It’s popular to hike to the summit for stellar views.
