Assessment of the weather forecast in Iceland for Sunday, October 9th.
The forecast is for very bad weather in the eastern part of the country on Sunday, with the height of the poor weather expected to occur in the afternoon. There will be lighter gusts of wind in the Westfjords starting in the morning, and it is expected that this will be enough to disrupt flights to Ísafjörður.
It is likely that there will be no flights to Akureyri and Egilsstadir from noon as we expect the weather in the north-eastern part of the country will probably not change when the morning flights are scheduled.
The weather is forecast to begin at midnight on Monday and continue into the morning. There is likely to be disruptions to flights to Egilsstaðir in the morning, but the weather should be favorable for flights to Ísafjörður and Akureyri.
Passengers will be contacted via email and via SMS to the phone number listed in the booking.
Today, Icelandair has experienced disruptions in the airline’s regional services and further disruptions can be expected. The reason for the disruptions is that the two larger regional aircraft (Q400) needed maintenance. One because of a bird strike and the other is waiting for a spare part. Icelandair is doing everything in its power to get the two aircraft back into service as soon as possible. They are expected to be back in service as soon as tomorrow, 27 September or Wednesday 28 September.
Extreme weather in Iceland has also affected the schedule. In order to get the schedule back on track, a Boeing 757 from Icelandair’s international services has been chartered for domestic flights. Affected passengers have received a new itinerary.
There will be another update here tomorrow. In the meantime, passengers are advised to follow updates on Icelandair’s website and messages from the airline.
