Gastown and Chinatown

Vancouver is renowned for its cultural diversity, its assortment of neighborhoods with their own distinct character. A good place to start is perhaps the area from which the city originally grew: the Gastown. The buildings date from the 19th century but the shops and restaurants housed in them are unlikely to remember much beyond this millennium. Gastown has been in a rapid process of gentrification and all the hippest places in town are here.

Rubbing shoulders with the Gastown is the Chinatown, almost as old and just as exciting. Here it is essential to make a stop at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, an area of calm in the midst of a busy city. Visitors should also drop by at a restaurant for a taste of dim sum and a cup of tea.

Vanier Park and Stanley Park

To the south of Chinatown, further culinary experiences await you at the Granville Island Public Market. If it’s crowded, you can always take your meal alfresco in the nearby Vanier Park. The park is home to the Museum of Vancouver, which hosts exhibitions on various aspects of the city’s history. Walk across the park, towards the shores of English Bay, and you will find the Vancouver Maritime Museum and Vancouver’s Seawall, a cycling path which stretches all the way to downtown.

Follow this route and you’ll eventually find yourself in Stanley Park, a large and eclectic outdoor area, a green space which has been developed and added to for over a hundred years. Adjacent to the park lies the West End, an excellent area for shopping and dining. And should you want an overview of the city and the surrounding Strait of Georgia, head north and hitch a ride with a cable car up Grouse Mountain.
