Live from Reykjavik

Icelandair proudly announces Iceland Airwaves: ‘Live from Reykjavik’, the first major livestream music event from the top of the world

Performances from the nation’s foremost musicians will bring the spirit of Iceland to the world

-------

Reykjavik, Thursday 15 October 2020: Founding sponsor Icelandair, today announces ‘Live from Reykjavik’, a new two-night streaming event on 13 and 14 November 2020, brought to the world by the team behind Iceland Airwaves.

For more than 20 years, the city of Reykjavik, and Icelandair planes travelling from across Europe and the US, have been filled with festivalgoers in early November – with in-the-know music lovers making the pilgrimage for the annual festival, Iceland Airwaves. Last year around 8,000 people descended on the capital for the international music event.

Like so many other festivals around the world, Reykjavik’s biggest music celebration was put on hold for this year. Yet showing truly Icelandic resilience, the team, partners and sponsors pivoted, bringing together an incredible assembly of 100% local talent for the first time in an ambitious online event during this unprecedented time.

‘Live from Reykjavik’ will mark a rare opportunity for people around the world – from those who’ve had travel plans or live music events cancelled, to those under lockdowns and quarantine – to experience the spirit of Iceland from the comfort and safety of their home.

Homegrown musicians include Of Monsters and Men, Eurovision 2020 favourite Daði Freyr, Ólafur Arnalds and Ásgeir, will perform in iconic venues across Reykjavik such as Iðnó, Gamla Bío, Art Museum Reykjavík and more.

“We wanted to find a way to shine a spotlight on the vast talent of the music scene here in Iceland,” says festival director Ísleifur Þórhallsson, “as well as support the larger industry and show some innovation. To have all these artists in Iceland at the same time is a ‘lightning strikes once’ moment, and we wanted to seize it with both hands.”

“We know international travel isn’t possible for many people right now, so we’re thrilled to still be able to share the spirit of Iceland with our customers and the world – albeit a little differently this year – through such a big celebration of Icelandic talent” says head of global marketing at Icelandair, Gísli S. Brynjólfsson.

The performances will be re-broadcast across four optimised time zones on 13/14* November from 19:30 local time:

  • UK & Europe (GMT) 7:30pm start
  • East Coast USA (EST) 7:30pm start
