What to see and do in Belgium

Brussels, Belgium

What to expect

While it might be one of the smallest countries in Europe, traveling to Belgium from the US means visiting a destination that's bursting with culture and things to do.

Home to just over 11 million people, Belgium is split into three communities: the Flemings in the north, who speak Flemish (a Dutch dialect), the French-speaking Walloons in the south and a small group of German-speakers in the east near Liège. Each group has different customs, but they are united by a shared national love of art, music and architecture.

The capital, Brussels, is the home of European politics. But beyond the meeting rooms and council offices, this bustling city is a hub of Belgian culture and cuisine. For US visitors who want to go further afield, charming cities like Antwerp and Bruges are definitely worth a visit.

The best time to visit

The most popular times to visit Belgium are during the spring and summer. Weather conditions are pleasant, with temperatures reaching the mid-70s at their warmest, ideal for exploring and enjoying a range of activities.

Another great time to visit is during November and December, when magical Christmas markets pop up across the country, bringing light and festivities to dark winter days. But, it you want to see the markets, be prepared for crowds and higher flight and accommodation costs.

Between January and March, temperatures drop and the weather is unpredictable. However, this can be a good time to find cheap flights to Belgium and enjoy the sights without too many tourists about.

Whenever you decide to book your flights from the US to Belgium, make sure to book in advance and check our flight deals page to find the best prices.

Discover Belgium's history

Belgium has a colorful history, and its many museums and cultural sites provide an interesting look into this country's rich past.

In and around Brussels, quirky museums are dedicated to key Belgian figures like the Horta Museum, which showcases the work of Art Nouveau architect, Victor Horta, and the Hergé Museum, dedicated to the life of Georges Remi (the cartoonist who created the character of Tintin).

The capital is also home to unique cultural attractions like Manneken Pis and the Atomium, a landmark that has become an international symbol of Brussels itself.

Just an hour and a half outside the city, Flanders Fields Museum, in Ypres, is another must-visit site. This poignant museum tells the story of the conflict that took part here during World War I.

Beyond Brussels…

While Brussels is an unmissable destination, there are plenty of other places worth adding to your itinerary.

Antwerp is Belgium's second biggest city, known for its stylish vibe and thriving art scene. For centuries, this cool city has attracted business travelers, fashionistas and artists alike. Enjoy Antwerp by taking in sights like the Grote Markt, discovering the Diamond Quarter or sampling authentic Belgian cuisine with a view of the port.

For a truly relaxing break, head to the romantic city of Bruges. Known for its picturesque canals and medieval old town, this quiet city is just an hour's train journey from Brussels – perfect for a day trip. Spend time to explore the cobbled streets, artisanal chocolate shops and quaint breweries serving up traditional Belgian beers and snacks.

Shopping in Belgium

No trip to Europe from the US is complete without a visit to a flea market and luckily, Belgium has plenty! From modest local markets to events like La Batte Sunday market in Liège – the largest weekly market in Belgium – you can spend hours browsing goods and finding hidden gems and quirky souvenirs.

Speaking of souvenirs, we recommend visiting independent stores wherever you're staying to find the best gifts for friends and family back home. Alongside magnets and postcards, you'll find authentic gifts like creamy chocolates and moreish speculoos – a type of traditional spiced cookie.

Belgium also offers plenty of high-end shopping opportunities, boasting trendy local boutiques alongside international designer brands. The Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries in Brussels are the perfect place for a spot of luxury window shopping.

Traditional Belgian dining

It's no secret that Belgium is a hot spot for food lovers. From rustic bistros and cafes to fine dining and Michelin-star restaurants, Belgium has it all.

If you've got a sweet tooth – or even if you don't – Belgian waffles should definitely be on your list. Available with all kinds of toppings, choose between a rich, round Liège waffle and a light, square Brussels waffle.

Another popular street food is, of course, fries. Enjoy them the Belgian way with a healthy dollop of mayonnaise or Andalouse sauce, a type of mayonnaise made with tomatoes and bell peppers, or with a portion of mussels, another classic Belgian dish.

Beer is another must-try delicacy, with thousands of varieties on offer for every palate. From refreshing Trappist beers brewed by monks to sweet Kriek lambic beers made with cherries, there's something for everyone.

Getting around Belgium

Like most European countries, Belgium has a great public transport system, making it easy to travel around.

The train network is extensive and thanks to the country's small size, most journeys are relatively short and quite affordable. Cities like Ghent, Antwerp and Bruges can all be reached from Brussels in under an hour and a half, making them perfect day trip destinations. There are also plenty of bus routes, ideal for traveling shorter distances or getting around in more rural parts.

While trains will get you to all major destinations, driving can be a great way to explore smaller places or venture off the beaten track, especially if you're in Belgium for several days. The country has good toll-free routes and motorways (similar to freeways and expressways), plus more scenic options so you can plan a trip that suits you.

Transport from the airport

Brussels Airport (BRU) is the largest airport and is where most flights to Belgium from the USA will land. It's located just 11km (6.9 miles) from the city, with plenty of public transport links to Brussels and beyond.

Regular trains run directly from the airport to the city center – about a 20 minute journey – throughout the day and night, and you can also take a bus. A one-way adult train ticket should cost around €12.

If you're not staying in Brussels, you'll likely be able to travel directly to your destination, with frequent trains to cities including Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent. You can even get direct trains to the Netherlands, Belgium's nearby neighbor.

If you've got lots of luggage, you might prefer to take a taxi. To get the best price and secure a slot, we'd recommend booking in advance.
