Time to board your Icelandair flight for the overnight to our hub at Keflavík International Airport! Keep your eyes peeled in the winter as you just may see the northern lights dancing beside you!
Transfer on your own to Reykjavík and check in to your hotel. We recommend Flybus airport transfers, which are available to purchase with the package during the booking process. Check-in times range between 2 - 3pm, however hotels generally can store your bags while you take a stroll and explore the charm and allure of Iceland's capital.
Dinner this evening is at your leisure. Reykjavik offers a multitude of restaurants, making dinner a wonderful way to get better acquainted with Iceland's capital.
Today you’ll visit the fascinating Aurora Northern Lights Centre in Reykjavík for an exciting and informative presentation on the Northern Lights, then head to Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO) where the world's oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. You will visit the geothermal fields of Geysir with bubbling mud pools, the high-spouting Strokkur hot spring, the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade, and Skálholt, Iceland's capital during the Middle-Ages and now a culture centre with a beautiful church. During the day you will also visit the town of Laugarvatn. The town is built around three hot springs, and the residents have cleverly harnessed the hot springs for heating, greenhouses and even cooking. You’ll experience a unique outdoor geothermal bakery at the Laugarvatn Fontana spa where Icelandic rye bread is baked in the hot sands. Try some of the freshly baked bread, hot from the ground. It’s especially delicious eaten with Icelandic butter and smoked trout.
Weather conditions permitting, your guide will take you on a northern lights hunt on foot in the area outside your hotel in the evening, or on the evening of Day 3 or 4.
Dinner and overnight in South Iceland.
You’ll start the day with a drive along the south shore, passing by local farms that are often populated with the legendary Icelandic horses. This area of Iceland is especially beautiful to view in the winter. Your first stop will be at the wonderful Lava Centre, an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. Up next are visits to the spectacular waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, then passing by Mýrdalsjökull Glacier on the way to Reynisfjara beach to enjoy a walk on the black sands admiring the extraordinary rock formations of Vík and thundering waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Dinner and overnight stay in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.
Today your tour group will drive through vast sand plains created by glacial outwashes as you head east to the southern area of Vatnajökull National Park, the largest in Western Europe and named after Europe's largest glacier. Then you’ll visit Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon for a breath-taking sight of icebergs floating in the deep glacial lagoon. Nearby is the dramatic beauty of the Diamond Beach, where shrinking icebergs settle on the black sands before drifting out to sea. Next, view Svínafellsjökull, one of the most beautiful of the glacial outlets emerging from Vatnajökull, and Skaftafell, a site of outstanding natural beauty dominated by Vatnajökull glacier. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Head towards the village of Hveragerði, one of the few sites in the world located directly in the middle of a geothermal area and often called 'The Flower Village' because of its many greenhouses heated by nearby hot springs. Follow along the coastline and its breath-taking waves to the Reykjanes peninsula where you can enjoy a dip in the famous Blue Lagoon, a unique wonder of nature with pleasantly warm mineral rich geothermal water in the middle of a black lava field. Return to Reykjavík where the evening is at your own leisure.
