The Arctic Coastline tour takes you along the picturesque coastline road with impressive sea cliffs and small old fishing villages. To arrive at our destination we drive through 3 mountain tunnels, passing dramatic sea cliffs and ocean views along the way. In between high mountains lies the picturesque town of Siglufjorður or Siglo. You will visit the award winning Herring Museum, to discover the local life during the early 20th century.
Siglufjörður was the main herring town in Iceland during the “herring years”. In the early 20th century the workers arrived in full force to the area to make the most of this exciting time. Without a doubt, herring played the biggest part in getting the Icelandic nation out of the turf houses and into the modern time.
The tour begins with a visit to a former herring village, Hjalteyri. A visit there is like stepping back over 50 years in time. The old houses along with the former herring meal factory stand there as if waiting for the past to return. Then you will go to Vellir food market and local farm. There is nothing like meeting the locals and learn about the Icelandic culture and habits, taste the local delicacies and buy different kinds of souvenirs straight from the handcraft producer.
You will have free time to explore the village or enjoy refreshments in a local bakery before heading back to Akureyri.
